INTERCONTINENTAL 70th ANNIVERSARY

A MILESTONE TO REMEMBER

InterContinental® Hotels & Resorts reaches a milestone on 4 April 2016 – 70 years since it was founded.

Looking back to the very first day of InterContinental life, founder of Pan American Airways, Juan Trippe had a vision to bring high-quality hotel accommodation to the end of every “Pan Am” flight route and here became the remarkable moment for the birth and the following growth of InterContinental® Hotels & Resorts.

1. ‘The Grande’ in Belém, Brazil was the first hotel to open in 1949, a four floor, 85-room property which boasted one telephone per floor – an attendant would run to alert a guest in their room whenever a call arrived.

2. InterContinental was the first international hotel brand to establish a presence in the Middle East with InterContinental Phoenicia Beirut in Lebanon, which opened in 1961. During the swinging 60s, it became the fashionable place to be, featuring a beauty parlour, barbershop and a bar named Sous La Mer (Under the Sea), which offered underwater views of the hotel’s pool.

3. One of our first hotels in Europe was InterContinental Vienna, opening in 1964. The hotel quickly gained cult status, opening its doors to the likes of the young Rolling Stones, and the glamourous Grace Kelly.

4. In the 1970s, first hotel opened in the USA - InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco. The original building was completed in 1878 by Mark Hopkins, who created it as a dream home for his wife. It continued to have a long history born out of love – it was the favoured place for servicemen and their sweethearts to meet before being deployed to fight in World War II.

Today, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is the world’s largest luxury hotel brand. There are 184 InterContinental hotels open in more than 60 countries, reaching almost every corner of the world.
